5 Window Types Gaining Popularity from Builders

EAS April Blog 2A windows’ primary function is to allow for natural illumination and ventilation. However, not every window operates and looks the same.

Some are inoperable while others are easy to open or can be large enough to take in the outdoor views.

A building’s architectural design and style help builders determine which installation, of the many window types, to choose for their projects.

5 Popular Window Types for Builders

Aside from the glass package and window glazing, the following are five window types gaining popularity from builders.

#1: Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged on either side (typically the left or right) and open outward by turning a crank.

These installations generally allow for plenty of ventilation and natural illumination without hindrance from the framing.

Pros

  • Ample natural light
  • Easier operation
  • Energy efficient

Cons

  • Aesthetically different from single or double-hung installations

#2: Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows get their name from the two sashes that allow the window to open from the top or the bottom vertically moving up and down.

These installations are one of the most widely used and popular window types for homeowners and builders.

Pros

  • Better ventilation
  • Highly sought after aesthetics
  • Customizable to complement most architectural designs

Cons

  • Can require a little more effort to operate the window panes

#3: Single Hung Windows

A single-hung window is very similar in appearance and is equally as popular as a double-hung window. The only difference is that there is only one sash and the bottom pane is the only operable one vertically moving up and down.

Pros

  • Less expensive than double-hung windows for the same aesthetics
  • Fewer moving parts

Cons

  • Less air circulation in contrast to its double-hung counterpart

#4: Picture Windows

If you are looking for a window that allows for maximum natural light, then a picture window is the ideal installation for your project. However, they are inoperable, so do not expect to open them when the fall air blows through.

Picture windows are great for projects where you are wanting a broader view of the natural landscape and often work well for multi-story foyers.

Pros

  • Less prone to air leakage
  • No mechanical parts that can break or malfunction
  • Less expensive
  • Available in a variety of shapes and sizes

Cons

  • Glass panes can lose or gain a lot of heat
  • Less ventilation as they are inoperable

#5: Slider Windows

Slider windows have a minimum of one sash and operable glass pane that horizontally glides along a track to open and close.

If your project is a modern or contemporary design, then slider windows are the complimentary installation choice--especially above a counter or a sink.

Pros

  • Easily operable
  • Simple seals
  • Often the least expensive window choice
  • Simple to meet local building code’s egress requirements

Cons

  • Perceived as being less sophisticated for aesthetics
  • Can require some muscle to open and close
