How-To: Spruce up Your Home before it Goes on the Market!

You wouldn’t go on a date looking like a hot mess, so why would you put your hot mess house on the market for everyone to see?

If you don’t find value in it, how will your prospective buyer?

Aside from the sweeping, vacuuming, dusting and scrubbing down of your bathroom appliances, there are a few more things you should do to make your home fit for going on the market!

3 Tips You Need to Do Before Selling!

Whether you find the hustle and bustle of moving and updating your home fun or not, the following tips are absolute musts when it comes to preparing your home to go on the market:

1. Creating an Empty Canvas

First things first, you need to create an empty canvas that the potential buyer can envision themselves in. This can be done a couple of different ways– consider stowing away your personal decor such as family photos and other personal decor so you can leave those walls as empty canvases.

Secondly, if you don’t need it, get rid of it. Not many people can  say that they enjoy clutter. Just remember you’re showing off your home, so make sure that there is enough storage and open space so the potential buyer can envision their personal items and art in the home  without having to make space around your clutter too.

The potential buyer of your home is going to have their own lifestyle and decorating ideas, so there’s no need to taint their vision with yours.

2. A Splash of Paint!

You shouldn’t go overboard here, but if you have lime green or bubblegum pink walls, you may want to tone them down a bit. Again, you’re helping the potential buyer see your home as their own.

Likewise, if all the walls are white, you may want to consider spicing them up a bit. Try using a neutral or muted tone (or even an accent wall) to help guide your wall painting choices.

3. Energy-Efficiency & HVHZ!

If you live in a high-velocity hurricane zone (HVHZ), it’s going to be extremely important that the home’s fixtures, such as windows and doors, are equipped to handle the impact of high winds and wind-tossed debris. As a bonus, it could also reduce the potential buyer’s homeowner’s insurance and make purchasing the home even more appealing.

Next, you’ll want to double-check that your windows and doors are up-to-date and energy efficient. Having energy efficient fixtures is a major bonus because these types of windows and doors will help regulate the home’s temperature and reduce their energy bills and not having them could potentially be a deal breaker.

Get Ready for the Big Day!

These tips are just a few handy helpers to get your home market ready and sold! Just remember to think about what you would want in your new home--security/protection, a place to call your own, or energy efficiency.

Whatever your must-haves in a new home are most likely similar or parallel your prospective home buyers, too.
