Are the new windows and doors replacing existing windows and doors, or are you swapping out a current style for a more modern one? Doing new construction?

It’s important to get a licensed, knowledgeable installer if you’re replacing existing windows and doors, as they can let you know if there are any other issues you need to consider. For example, do you have any custom-size windows or doors? Will there need to be any modification to take into account when installing the new/window or door? Asking these questions up-front will help avoid surprise costs later on.

If you are doing new construction, then you already have, or are, a licensed contractor. When reviewing the building plans, you will already know and have addressed any custom requirements/costs, and be familiar with all building codes.

What problems/issues do you have with your current windows or doors?

Understanding WHY you are replacing your windows and doors is one of the first steps to narrowing your choices and options. For example, are you updating your windows to fix a current issue, like energy loss, or for an aesthetic reason? There is no wrong answer, but it’s important to establish this first so as not to get overwhelmed by the vast array of choices in today’s market.

What is your main concern when looking at new windows and doors? Is it security? Sustainability? Energy efficiency? Cost? Noise reduction? Where the product is made?

Once you’ve identified WHY you are looking to replace your current and windows and doors, the next step is to figure out what other, or what primary requirements you have for the new windows and doors. You should also identify those features that are a must-have and those that are a nice-to-have. This will especially be helpful if you are trying to adhere to a certain budget.

It’s important to get an installer that knows the codes for your area, so they can ensure you are not only getting everything on your wish list, but that you are in compliance for safety reasons as well.

What climate do you live in? Are you in a hurricane zone? Are there any other climate related concerns that need to be taken into account?

This question is an important one and ties in with the previous answer: it is paramount to get an installer that understands the building codes in your area to ensure you are making the safe, required choice when it comes to certain window requirements.

Do you have any custom requirements for the new windows and doors?

If you have a need, or desire, for custom windows and doors, it’s important that you make sure the windows you are buying CAN come in custom sizes, if there are any limitations (size, color, options, etc.), and what the budget impact will be. Establishing this up-front will help you as you choose your other windows/doors, manage your budget, and choose the right window for your needs.
