Step-by-Step Window Replacement in Florida

Picture-Window-Aluminum-3000-series2.jpgInterior design and creative building constructs see new trends each year. This year, homeowners want their indoor and outdoor decor and designs to feel as though they are a seamless transition.

How do architects and homeowners make that happen? You can replace smaller windows with casement windows which also helps illuminate your home’s stylish interior design and decor.

If you choose to update your home through window replacement, you may opt for some DIY methods which typically include:

  • Figuring out your windows opening dimensions
  • Taking off the existing window’s trim
  • Having a leveler, hammer, screws and measuring tape handy

4 Steps to Window Replacement in Florida

Step 1: Measure for Accuracy

The first step to window replacement is to get accurate measurements of the window space. You'll measure the width first which is the space from the inside of one side of the jam to the other. Ideally, you should measure the width at the bottom, middle and top of the window.

You should also measure the height of the window which is the space from the top of the window sill to the bottom of the jam and should be measured at the left, middle and right of the window.

Once you have accurate measurements, you can purchase the window(s) of your choice.

Before you begin installing your new window(s), the next step is to remove all the window sashes so your replacement window(s) will fit inside your existing frame.

Step 2: Caulking

Caulk the tops of the window jams on the inside and outside, install the sill angle and then caulk the top of the header, or expander, after you put it on the top of the window.

Step 3: Window Placement

Next, you will put your new window in the appropriate place and make sure that it lays square and that screws are installed at the top and bottom of the side jams and aren't too tight.

Then, you can seal any gaps by sliding the header up.

Step 4: Final Caulking

Lastly, you should do a final caulking inside the window.

There are many variations to replacement window installations in Florida, and this is as basic as it gets; so, just be sure that if you are replacing your windows, you have accurate measurements, all the necessary supplies for a successful installation and, if necessary, a handyman or window installation expert ready to assist.

Also, keep in mind that when you replace an older window with a new window, such as an impact window, your home will be more sealed; therefore, moisture is likely to build up resulting in window or door condensation
