A strong showing by the construction industry sustained January employment in Southwest Florida although the jobless rate increased as Christmas retail jobs evaporated.
Lee County’s unemployment rate was 5.3 percent in January, up from 5 percent in December, and Collier’s was 5.2 percent, up from 4.7 percent, according to figures released Tuesday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
