Can You Really Save Money by Replacing Your Windows?

The answer is a resounding YES! But the question is…what type of windows should you invest in for your home to maximize your electric bill savings?

Most homeowners prefer to have some sort of glass tint on their windows, which is a great start. This is a very effective way to reduce energy costs and save money on your electric bill. Tinted glass absorbs solar radiation as it enters through the glass, thereby reducing heat and light transfer into the room.

You can save even more money, though, by going to the next step and getting windows with a Low-E glass coating. Low-E coatings are applied to the internal glass to separate both heat and light energy. The heat is reflected back to the heat source, and the short wave light can pass through the coating to allow for interior illumination. During the summer, the Low-E coatings will allow natural light in but will keep the inside of your home cooler. This helps provide better insulation and more energy savings all year!low_e.jpg

Many homeowners are now maximizing their energy efficiency by investing in an extra pane of glass, which comes standard in insulated glass systems. This will give you an extra layer of insulation. If the space between the glass layers is filled with argon gas, which helps reflect outside heat and regulate the temperatures inside your home, you will have reached the maximum potential for energy efficiency and may qualify for an Energy Star rating, which means you could qualify for tax credits!

Installing Energy Star certified windows can lower electric bills by an average of 12 percent nationwide, compared to non-certified products, according to Energy Star. If you have single-pane windows, replacing them with Energy Star qualified products will save you between $101 and $538 a year, depending on the number of windows you replace and your location. If you have double-pane windows, you will save you between $27 and $153 a year.
