5 Clever Ideas to Make Your Home Attractive, Secure, and Hurricane Safe

Solivita_Front
It seems these days, hurricanes are getting more common and doing a lot more damage than we heard about as kids — or maybe we're just paying more attention now that we're homeowners. Whatever the reality, it pays to ensure you and your family are safe and secure if the worst happens. But hurricane-proofing doesn't have to be an eyesore either.

There are a variety of window and door systems on the market that are just as attractive as their less protective cousins.

1. Vinyl or Aluminum Impact-Resistant Windows
Impact-resistant windows are an attractive solution to protecting your home during a hurricane. These windows not only protect your home in storms, but secure and protect your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When choosing windows, look for thick thermal barrier or other energy-efficient features.

Vinyl offers better energy efficiency for long-term savings, but aluminum is more cost effective and easier to maintain.

2. Accordion Shutters
Accordion shutters are a great solution for those who are concerned about last-minute hurricane protection. As with other hurricane security options, they're excellent year round for added security and you can find them priced moderately. They are available in either curved or radius tracks for balconies and bay windows.

Look for durable, secure models that are easy to open and close (and lockable from both the outside and inside). You may also want a model that allows you to see outside if necessary.

3. HVHZ-Certified Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass doors are a popular choice in the United States thanks to their relative cost-efficiency and the promise of letting in plenty of light. But in a hurricane zone, they can be deadly. The good news for people in these High Velocity Hurricane Zones, however, is that the need for impact resistant glass also often comes with increased energy efficiency. They come in a variety of colors and styles, too.

Look for models that are Energy Star Certified with the extra security of keyed handles or two-point locking systems (or both). They come in both vinyl and aluminum options depending on your budget.

4. Roll-Up Shutters
Roll-up shutters are beautiful and can be placed in larger unrestricted openings in your home that some other shutters may not fit, meaning the right models can also be used the rest of the year for added security or noise reduction.

Look for models with noise control that give you a view to the outside and are energy efficient. It's also recommended you look for energy-efficient models that are easy to open (they come in your preference of manual or electric operation).

5. Other considerations:

  • Garage door bracing (reinforcement is a must!)
  • Vinyl awnings (additional protection)
  • Fabric hurricane panels (for last-minute emergencies if another protection system is damaged)
