3 Stages of Replacing Your Windows

House repairs after tornado Boarded window beneath roof with protective sheets of blue plasticHave you noticed a subtle draft in your home or maybe moisture buildup around your windows anytime it rains? Those are two of the most common signs that your windows may need to be replaced.

Whether you visually or physically notice your window’s wear and tear, replacing your windows can easily feel like an overwhelming project. However, they don’t all have to be replaced all at once. And there are several tax credit options (such as the Inflation Reduction Act’s, Energy-Efficient Home Improvement Credit, and Florida’s HB 7071 2-year tax holiday) to make them more affordable.

There are also many features you and your home will benefit from by replacing your windows, including improved comfort, security, and energy efficiency.

Replacing Your Windows in 3 Simple Stages

Looking at the big picture of replacing your windows can feel daunting. But when you break the process down, there are only three simple stages to it.

Step 1: Determine which windows need to be replaced

As mentioned before, you can choose to only replace the damaged windows or you can choose to replace all of them for a consistent and polished look in your home. Functionality should be the main priority when determining which windows need to be replaced.

If a window is cracked, damaged, or challenging to open, that installation should take priority so it can be a functioning window.

Step 2: Choosing the designs of your window replacements

Next, aesthetics should be taken into account. Do you want to create the same look or update the window’s style? Keep in mind that windows today look different than they did years ago, so if aesthetics is your main concern, it may be best to replace all the windows in a room at the same time.

Step 3: Budgeting for window replacements

Once you have decided which windows you will be replacing and what aesthetics you are trying to achieve, you should evaluate your budget and create a plan which may mean only replacing one or two windows at a time or all of them at once—depending on your budget.

A few factors to consider when evaluating replacing your windows and your budget, include:

  • Labor and installation costs
  • Frame material
  • Window style
  • Energy efficient upgrades and glass packages
